Hello,
Looking for advice/guidance on purchasing an engagement ring. I am looking for a ~2 ct round cut, to be set in yellow gold as a solitaire. I have looked in person and online extensively.
Do you have a ballpark budget for the center stone? Have you already found a setting you prefer?
I’d like to keep the budget to less than $20k. Haven’t decided completely on setting. Although she wants something simple like this. Yellow gold with white prongs.
14K Yellow Gold 1.5mm Comfort Fit Engagement Ring
I suppose the color is what’s giving me the hardest time. When I’ve looked in person, I’ve been able to see the difference in J vs H by the naked eye.
Thank you for the additional info. I found these diamonds:

Do you think we would benefit in dropping down to an I in color? Spend the little bit extra in carat?
I’m curious as to what you would pick out if you were making the purchase.
It’s up to you whether you would be okay with I color. To the majority of people, I colored diamonds look colorless in solitaire settings. Out of the three options, I like the first one as it’s significantly cheaper and some of the feathers might be covered with prongs.
Here are some nice I colored diamonds:

So after looking at the diamonds you sent a bunch more, I think I’m going to stick to the original color criteria (H or better). I think it may be worth the extra couple thousand. I’ve been looking at the second and third diamonds you sent me in the first email and am strongly considering one of those two. I really like this one. Did it fall to an SI1 just because of the little cluster of impurities on the perimeter? I can’t really see any other glaring flaws.
Here was the other choice:
What do ya think between those two? Or if you see something better in that criteria let me know.
If you want to see the exact location of the inclusions, check the clarity plot in the GIA cert.
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.01-carat-g-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-11082108?a_aid=dmnd1357 – This one seems to be really nice, one of the feathers can be covered with a prong and the other feather is faint and thin. I think it’s a very nice option. If you want to be sure, you can ask JA to inspect the stone. But I, personally, would give it a try.
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.01-carat-h-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-11449634?a_aid=dmnd1357 – This one is also perfectly cut, there is almost no difference between them.
If you are planning to buy soon, I’d suggest putting them on hold as good diamonds get sold quickly.
Ok, so I contacted JA. I have a hold on two diamonds. 11449634 actually sold while I was chatting with them. The two I have a hold on are:
and
The second one is a new option. Let me know what you think.
…
While I was searching tonight 11449634 became available again. I’m back between our original two.
www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut/2.00-carat-h-color-si1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-10440401?a_aid=dmnd1357 – This new option is also nice, I don’t see any red flags. They are all very similar. I’d personally choose either the H VS1 or the G colored diamond. All are perfectly cut, there is almost no difference between them. It’s up to you which one you like the most. Please let me know how you decided.
Decided on the H VS1 and placed the order. I highly highly doubt I will have any issues with that stone.
Thanks for all the help
